History:
Albertsons, a wholly owned subsidiary of Supervalu, is a supermarket retailer operating grocery stores and drug stores. Joe Albertson founded Albertsons in 1939 in Boise, Idaho.In 1969, Albertsons entered into partnership with Skaggs Companies, Inc. and the first combination of drug/grocery stores was created. The partnership dissolved in 1977. In 1999, Albertsons made its biggest acquisition: American Stores Company.
Supervalu, an investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management, acquired Albertsons in January, 2006. Now, Albertson's Inc. is not a separate publicly traded company and has been removed from the NYSE. Albertsons will only exist as a nameplate for the grocery stores acquired by Supervalu and Cerberus. The mission of Albertsons is to satisfy their customers in the retail business.
