History
BHP Billiton was formed from a merger between two highly complementary companies: BHP and Billiton. BHP was one of the oldest and largest companies of Australia. It was a leading global natural resources company, with a diversified commodity suite including minerals, oil, gas and steel.

Billiton was among the world's premier mining companies, with a portfolio of best-in-class mining and metals operations. BHP Limited and Billiton Plc merged and the BHP Billiton Group was formed in 2001.
