History
The origin of BT dates back to the establishment of the Electric Telegraph Company in 1846. Several other telecommunications companies were also set up in the United Kingdom in late 19th century and early 20th century.

As these companies merged or acquired or broke down, the survivors were finally transferred to state control under the Post Office. Post Office Telecommunications was renamed as British Telecom in 1980. It became a privatized company, British Telecommunications plc in 1984.

The company adopted a new trading name, BT, a new corporate identity and a new organizational structure on 2 April 1991. Today BT Group plc is a global communications company.
