History
CBS Corporation is a mass media company. Columbia Broadcast System was formed in September 1928. It was formerly known as United Independent Broadcasters Inc., a network of 16 independent radio stations. The radio network grew and by 1935, CBS became the largest radio network in USA. CBS started television broadcasting from 1940 and FM transmission from 1941. The CBS Television network was formed in 1948. The CBS eye logo was formed in 1951. Viacom and CBS merged on May 4, 2000. On June 14, 2005 the Viacom Board of Directors approved the creation of two separate publicly traded companies – CBS Corporation and Viacom Inc. Today, CBS Corporation, led by Leslie Moonves, is composed of the CBS Television Network, UPN, CBS Stations Group, CBS Paramount Television, King World, Showtime, CBS Radio, CBS Outdoor, Simon & Schuster, Paramount Parks, CBS Digital Media, CSTV and CBS Consumer Products. The Viacom split was completed on December 31,2005.
