Cigna had its origin in the formation of Insurance Company of North America (INA) in 1792. Another concern known as the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG) was formed in 1865. In 1981, CG and INA announced the intent to combine Connecticut General Corporation and INA Corporation.The name "Cigna" was chosen as a combination of its predecessors' initials.
