The history of Citigroup dates back to the founding of Citibank in 1812, Bank Handlowy in 1870, Smith Barney in 1873, Banamex in 1884, and Salomon Brothers in 1910. Citigroup Inc.
was formed when all Citicorp and Travelers Group divisions merged in 1998. Today, it is a pre-eminent financial services company, serving millions of customers worldwide.

2004:

• January 9: Washington Mutual Finance Corporation was acquired and it joined the CitiFinancial family.
