Edeka Zentrale

History

Edeka Zentrale was founded in 1898 as the EDK (Einkaufsgenossenschaft der Kolonialwarenhändler). The company was renamed to its current name, EDEKA in 1913. In 1972, the cooperatives changed structure and formed twelve regional companies, the umbrella corporation and the EDEKABANK.
Thus, Edeka Zentrale converted itself from a cooperative to a public limited company. Today, Edeka Zentrale is a powerful force in food sales in Germany and one of Europe's largest retail and wholesale food organizations.
