History

The history of Federated Dept Stores stretch back to the middle of the 19th century. Federated Department Stores, Inc. was formed in 1929 as a holding company by several family-owned department stores. Bloomingdale's joined Federated in 1930.
Federated celebrated its 75th birth anniversary in 2004. In 2005, Federated began operating nationwide under two national store nameplates - Macy's and Bloomingdale's. Today, Federated Dept Stores is USA's largest department store retailer.
