Fortis was founded as AG Leven in 1824. AG Group and AMEV/VSB merged in 1990 to form Fortis. In 2000, AG changed its name to Fortis AG.

Recent Merger and Acquisition

2004:

• In January, Fortis and ICBC (Asia) signed an agreement to merge the consumer and commercial banking activities of Fortis Bank Asia HK and ICBC (Asia).
• In June Fortis acquired Deutsche Immobilien Leasing France and 10% of Banca Intermobiliare in Italy.

2005:

• In July, Fortis acquired 93.3% of Disbank.
• In January, Fortis acquired a 51% stake in a joint venture (Millenniumbcp Fortis) with Banco Comercial Português.

2006:

• In June, Fortis signed an agreement to acquire Cinergy Marketing & Trading.
