History:
J.C.Penney is a century old company in the US with main interests lying in its numerous Department Home Stores. J.C. Penney began operations in 1902, under the purview of Cash Penney and William Henry McManus.By 1917, the company had 175 stores in 22 states in the United States.
More stores were added and in 1966, J.C. Penney made it to the country's 50 states with the opening of its Honolulu, Hawaii store.
Diversification into other lines of business followed, the company acquired Thrift Drug, in 1969. In 1984, J.C. Penney acquired the JCPenney National Bank.
The JCPenney Television Shopping Channel appeared on television in 1989. In 2004, the company stopped dealing in pharmaceuticals with the sale of its Eckerd division, after having acquired Fay's Drug and Kerr Drug in 1996.
J.C. Penney's e-commerce storefront exceeded the one billion dollar revenue mark for the first time in 2005.
