History:
The Government of Japan established the Japan Air Lines Co., Ltd. in August 1951. Starting with a modest crew of three Northwest Airlines Martin 202 aircraft and only operating domestically, the airline has come a long way over the years. Japan Air Lines (JAL) now serves nearly 170 cities in around 35 countries and operates a fleet of 270 plus aircrafts. JAL was fully privatized on November 18, 1987 when the government stake, then 34%, was sold off. Japan Airlines also carries air cargo, operates a low-fare domestic airline, and provides maintenance and ground-support services. Following a recent diversification in their line of business, JAL also owns the global chain of Nikko hotels.Activities:

The company had an operating revenue of USD 18,798 million and incurred a net loss of USD 404 million in 2006. Japan Air Lines has the distinction of having the largest fleet of Boeing 747s in the world (approximately 76 in March 2005).
