History:
A global leader in Tobacco related products, Japan Tobacco Inc. started as Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation in 1949. Until June, 2004, the Japanese Ministry of Finance owned a 66.67% stake in the company, which was later adjusted to 50%. JT International (JTI), bought from R.J. Reynolds, is an operating division of Japan Tobacco Inc. It handles the international production, marketing and sales of the group's cigarette brands.Activities:
According to the company's official web site, "JT is no longer just a tobacco company." It adds, "Within JT's pillar business operations (tobacco, pharmaceuticals and foods), JT is establishing value-added brands." The company also operates aggressively in foods, agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, engineering, and real estate.Cigarettes, however, remain the primary source of revenue for the company. Premier brands include Camel, Mild Seven, Salem, and Winston. Other notable brands include Amadis, Arsenal, Aspen, Belomorkanal, Cabin, Caster, Club, Contessa, Crescent & Star, Doral, Dorchester, Embassy, and Export A.
