History:
Originally called the New Law Life Assurance Society, Legal & General was formed in 1836. The company expanded rapidly and several smaller insurance companies were acquired. The shares of the company trade on the London Stock Exchange as part of the FTSE 100 Index.

Activities:
Insurance is the primary business of the company.
The company is a market leader in providing individuals and organizations with life, health, property, auto, and liability insurance. Investment services are also important, along with including fund management, unit trusts, and individual savings accounts. There is also a division which deals in mortgage loans, real estate businesses and venture capital processes.

Performance:
Legal & General reported annual sales to the tune of $53.3 billion and a net income of $1.8 billion in 2005.

Legal & General Group Plc is headed by Mr Rob J Margetts, who is the chairman of the company. Mr. Tim Breedon is the CEO of the company. Legal & General Group had an employee count of 9,273 in 2005.
