Originally established in May 1940, with the arrival of Ray Kroc in 1955, McDonalds began the growth that lead it to become the leading food service retailer in the world. McDonalds operates fast food outlets and restaurants in 120 countries worldwide serving about 54 million customers daily.

Organization

McDonalds is currently headed by Mr. J. Skinners, CEO of the company and employs about 450,000 people worldwide with outlets operating under corporate ownership as well as franchisees. McDonalds conscientiously adheres to local cultural food customs in its meal offerings in different parts of the world.

In the book Fast Food Nation, the author Eric Schlosser states that McDonalds' playground operations are the largest operated by any private group in the U.S. Schlosser also says McDonalds is the largest purchaser of meat, potatoes, and apples in the United States.

Performance

In fiscal year 2006 McDonalds achieved global revenues of $21.58 billion which was a 5.7% increase over the previous year.
