Migros was set up in 1925 by Gottlieb Duttweiler in Zurich, Switzerland. Mr. Duttweiler’s objective was retailing of basic foodstuff at highly competitive prices. But it wasn’t till 1926 that the first Migros store was established, also in Zurich and later the second one at Ticino that really set Migros on the growth path. The second store was set up as a cooperative which is the proven business organizational structure of Migros. Today with 2 million members from all over Switzerland the Migros chain organized under the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (FMC) is the largest supermarket chain in the country.Migros is a Fortune 500 company.
