Corporate History:
Nippon Life Insurance is the largest life insurance company in Japan. The company traces its origin to 1898, when it was founded as the Nippon Life Assurance Co., Inc. Many important milestones followed in its century old existence like the payment of first profit dividends to policyholders in Japan in 1898, the opening of the New York office in 1975, establishment of representative offices in London, Frankfurt, and Beijing in the 80’s, etc. The company was featured in the FORTUNE Global 500 list of companies in 2006 in the 69th position.

The Company is active in life insurance related business activities. Subsidiaries specialize in both non – life insurance and life insurance operations, and business as diverse as corporate post retirement pension management system, life insurance solicitation and non-life insurance policy work, insurance policy confirmation work, as well as life insurance brokerage in North America.
Asset Management related businesses: Nippon Life Insurance, along with its subsidiaries in asset management-related activities engage in financial advisory services, trust and custody services, investment trust consignment services, venture capital, leasing, credit guarantee services, building management, financing agency services, and overseas real estate ventures.
General affairs related operations: This portion of the group consists of around 12 subsidiary companies. Their activities include temporary staffing services, mediation and sales of goods to Nippon Life and its employees, software development, information processing services, printing services, system administration and management, survey and research work, etc.
Performance:
Nippon Life Insurance is on its way to growth in the financial world. The company earned revenues worth ¥ 6,839.4 billion in 2006. Operating profit of the company during the financial year ending March, 2006 was ¥ 443.7 billion.
