Office Depot was established with the opening of the first retail store in Lauderdale, Florida, in1986. Today the company has grown to become the largest retailer of office products worldwide with operations in different parts of the world. In 1990, Office Depot had grown to 173 retail stores across 27 states in the US and became the largest office products retailer in North America after its merger with Office Club Inc. By 1998 after a series of mergers and acquisitions culminating in the merger of Viking Office Products, the leading direct mail marketer of office products, Office Depot became the largest company in the world retailing office products.
