Plains All American Pipeline or PAA is one the largest hydrocarbon logistics companies of the US with a vast storage and transportation infrastructure. It is a publicly traded master limited partnership with a 50 % stake in PAA Vulcan Gas Storage LLC. PAA handles 3 million barrels per day of crude oil, refined products and LPG through its wide network of assets located in vital producing basins and transportation getaways of North America.
Activities
PAA owns and operated a number of strategically located assets that play a key role in US and Canadian energy supplies.
PAA’s operations can be classified into 3 main business areas:
Transportation – This service is fee based and involves transportation of crude oil and refined products on pipelines and gathering systems.
- 20,000 miles of pipeline and gathering systems
- 30 million barrels of tank capacity to facilitate pipeline throughput
- 57 transport and storage barges and 30 transport tugs
Facilities – This service is fee based and involves storage, terminalling and throughput services for crude oil, refined products and LPG, LPG fractionation and isomerization. A number of assets have been used in this service.
- 30 million barrels of active, aboveground terminalling and storage facilities
- 1.3 million barrels of active, underground terminalling and storage facilities
- A fractionation plant in Canada with processing capacity of 4,400 berrels per day and a fractionation and isomerization facility in California with an aggregate processing capacity of 22,000 barrels per day
Marketing – This service involves a number of merchant activities.
- Purchase of US and Canadian crude oil at the wellhead, pipeline and terminal facilities and purchase of foreign cargoes at their load port and other locations in transit.
- Storage of inventory during critical market conditions
- Purchase of refined products and LPG from producers, refiners and other marketers
- Resale or exchange of crude oil, refined products and LPG at various points along the distribution chain
- Arranging for transportation of crude oil, refined products and LPG on trucks, barges, railcars, pipelines and ocean going vessels
Performance
In fiscal 2006 PAA’s revenue was 22,060 million USD that was 39 % less than what it was in the fiscal before.
The total value of the assets held by PAA in fiscal 2006 was 8,814.9 million USD that was 113.9 % more than what it was in the fiscal before.
