Debt Negotiation

The debt negotiation is a process that enables the debtors to pay off a percentage of the total debt to the creditor. The debt negotiation is also sometimes referred as the debt settlement.

The debt negotiation is generally used in the debt settlement or debt arbitration. When the mounting debt becomes unmanageable for the debtors, it is always advisable for them to go for debt negotiation rather than filing for bankruptcy. The debt settlement is a plan, which is generally offered to those individuals who cannot manage their debts by debt consolidation program. In case the individual is not able to pay the minimum installment of the debt consolidation plan or the person hasn’t been able to make any payment in last three months, debt negotiation is the only way left for him in order to avoid the bankruptcy. Debt negotiation with the creditors proves to be of great help in solving the debt problems of the debtor. The debt negotiation is often considered in the best interest of the creditors to negotiate the debt repayment with the debtors, from whom there exists a thin chance of retrieving money.

The debt negotiation companies negotiate with the loan providers on behalf of their clients. They make it a point to settle at an amount, which is 40%-50% of the total outstanding. When the debt settlement is finally done, the debt negotiation company makes a one-time payment to the creditors on behalf of the debtors; which is of course earned from the debtor only. Once the individuals go for the debt negotiation program, the advantage that they have is that they stop making any direct payments to the creditors. The debt negotiating company collects the monthly installment amount from the debtors and keeps that in the account or lets the clients keep their money in their own accounts and the monthly installments are paid from those accounts.

Though we can say that the debt negotiation saves the debtors from bankruptcy but it can affect the credit ratings of the individual adversely. People also have to pay a fee of around 14%-25% of the total debt amount to the debt negotiating company according to the market norms.
