The Economy of Bhutan was considered to be the smallest in the world in the year 2001. During that period, Bhutan mainly banked on forestry, agriculture as well as hydroelectricity. In 2000, 92.9% of Bhutan's population comprised of inhabitants from the rural areas.

This figure indicated a decrease in number as compared to the numbers posted in 1990 with 94.8%. The currency of Bhutan is called “ngultrum”. Agriculture forms the sources of sustenance for majority of the people in Bhutan.

The gross domestic product or the GDP Bhutan as in the year 2005 was $844 million.

Phuntsholing and Thimpu are prominent places in Bhutan and most of the activities occur in these places. Tourism industry is also very popular in Bhutan and several projects are undertaken to promote tourism in Bhutan.

However, Bhutan imposes certain limitations with regard to the number of people entering the country. This step is taken in order to reduce the incidence of harmful impacts on the culture, environment of Bhutan. The tourism industry provides only 5% of the employment opportunities.

Protecting the environment is a vehement step taken by Bhutan.

Scarcity of proper drinking water, soil erosion etc are some of the troubles Bhutan is subjected to. Mining, manufacturing industry provides only 1% of the total employment openings in Bhutan.
