Philippine National Bank

Philippine National Bank came into existence in the year 1916 as a government owned banking institution. The Bank aimed at bringing sustained economic development by providing continuous support to the agricultural sector and industrial sector of the Philippine Economy. The Philippine Government authorized Philippine National Bank to sanction short term and long term loans to agriculture and industry.

Philippine National Bank acted as the Central Bank of Philippine till 1949. In that period, the Philippine National Bank carried out the following duties and responsibilities :

  • Issuance of Currency
  • Depository Authority of Government Funds
  • Custodianship of Bank Reserves
  • Clearing House Operations of the Banking System



    As in 1949, a separate Central Bank was established, the above discussed specially granted powers of Philippine National Bank were withdrawn.

    In 1955, Philippine National Bank started operating as an Investment Bank. From that period it got involved in Issuance of Debentures. The bank was also authorized to buy and hold shares.

    In 1966, the Philippine National Bank introduced Electronic Data Processing System which was the first of its kind in the Far East.

    From 1967, the Bank started to expand its network in the foreign countries. Within the year 1979, Philippine National Bank successfully spread its network in places like London, Singapore, Amsterdam, Jakarta and Honolulu. At present the bank runs more than 100 branches across Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East.

    In the year 1989, Philippine National Bank was privatized as the bank's shares were offered to public and the bank was listed on the Stock Exchange. From 2000, the Bank started to grow tremendously as the largest stockholder of the Bank injected billions of rupees as capital into the Bank.

    At present, Philippine National Bank has become a prominent bank in the whole world which offers Personal Banking Services, Lending Services, Investment Services and Insurance Services, Credit Card Services and Asset Management Services.
