Vanuatu Poverty level as estimated by the Asian Development Bank has not reached the level where it can be considered a threat to the society. Though much information is not available regarding this vice in Vanuatu society the ADB has made a survey to find out the percentage of poor people in Vanuatu. Vanuatu does not have to face acute poverty in terms of destitution but much of the population of Vanuatu earns below the poverty level as marked by the US. According to ADB recent estimates 40% of all Ni- Vanuatu and 50% of the rural population have incomes below the International Poverty line.
The Department of Social and Economic Development had shouldered the responsibility of consulting with the leaders of 12 villages, with other officials, women and young people and also with the elected officials regarding improvement measures. These discussions were carried on in villages and settlement communities in the provinces of Torba, Shefa, Tafia and Penama. All these sites were selected considering the fact that they had equal amounts of rural and urban population. This whole assessment program wax sponsored by the Asian Development Bank.
According to the UN Development Programs human poverty index, Vanuatu’s rate was 46.4. This rate is better than the rate received by many other countries in of Oceania. Therefore Vanuatu is in a better position than many other countries of the Oceanic.
The Poverty Assessment Program
A poverty assessment program was organized in 2002 by the government where the natives were asked to speak about their poverty so that the government could assess the level of poverty in Vanuatu. They were also asked to provide suggestions that could improve their standard of living.
