The rules and regulations regarding finance and taxation in the state of New York is regulated by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. In the United States, the NYSDTF functions as a central agency of the state of New York.

The responsibility of NYSDTF is to deal with the publication of tax laws, as well as tax forms. They also control the circulation of tax revenue to the other counties and agencies in the state of New York.

The organizational rules of the NYSDTF are stringent and have been made in conformance with the “Public Officer Law”. Every public or state employee has to comply with the rules and regulations of the Public Officer Laws.

The formal establishment of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance was on 1st January, 1927. Originally, the idea behind its creation was to search for a mathematical interpretation for tax revenue distribution among the counties in the state of New York.

Currently, the Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF) is one of the biggest state revenue collection agencies in the U.S.

New York State Department of Taxation and Finance collects taxes on the following items:

  • Alcohol
  • Withholding among others
  • Cigarette and tobacco
  • Corporate
  • Real estate
  • Gasoline
  • Income
  • Sales

The NYSDTF functions through outlining the tax laws and imparting education among the individual and commercial taxpayers. It also performs scrutinizing functions. Those people who do not abide by the taxation laws, the NYSDTF has the total authority to prosecute them.

Except the state taxes, the NYSDTF collects the following taxes:

  • Local sales tax
  • The surcharge for buying cigarettes or riding in cabs in New York City
  • Personal income tax in New York City
  • Delinquent child support payments
