Congressional Federal Credit Union

Congressional Federal Credit Union (CFCU) is a not-for-profit banking institution wholly owned by its members and operating in the Washington, DC area.

History:

Founded in 1953 as Congressional Employees Federal Credit Union, this organization actually first did business out of a desk drawer in the Folding Room of the Longworth Building on Independence Avenue and South Capitol Street. Eight people deposited an average of $5 to get the group started, which has grown over the decades to serve 130 employers beyond the US House of Representatives.

Though most members take advantage of the four branches on Capitol Hill, an additional headquarters is available just across the Potomac River in Oakton, Virginia.

Organizational Structure:

An eleven-person Board of Directors has been elected by the membership to make the strategic decisions for CFCU. With the help of a Supervisory Committee (with detailed understanding of the fiscal information) and the management team (that focus on daily operations), these volunteers ensure the financial health of the institution while striving to keep member needs met through an extensive range of products and services. As a result, over 43,000 people do business with CFCU, meaning there are more than $658 million in assets being managed by the organization.
