FirstLight Federal Credit Union

FirstLight Federal Credit Union (FLFCU) is a not-for-profit financial institution providing its member-owners with an alternative to corporate banks in the El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico areas.

History:
Biggs Air Force Base was a large part of the El Paso community in 1955, yet nine members of the local civilian and military personnel felt as though better service could be rendered to workers within the airfield’s confines. In deciding to found Frontier Federal Credit Union, they gave others more access to low-interest loans and high-yield savings accounts.

Then, in 1972, the group merged with a similar organization at Fort Bliss to form Air Defense Center Federal Credit Union.
As the 1980s dawned, the local teachers credit union became part of the institution and it continued to grow until a name change was mooted to reflect the diverse membership. The board of directors settled on FirstLight Federal Credit Union in 2005, feeling it better reflected the wide distance between its locations than its original, military-inspired name could.

Organizational Structure:
The all-volunteer Board of Directors is elected by members on a rotating basis to formulate the strategy for FLFCU as it continues to grow. Working in tandem with a team of executives that oversee daily goings-on, they set out a vision to make the institution as financially stable as possible while continuing to help shareholders achieve their goals. This has led to an asset portfolio totaling more than $706 million spread across the over 105,000 members.
