Mainstreet Credit Union
History:
Formed in 1953 by a small group of educators as the Northeast Johnson County Teachers’ Credit Union, $65 worth of deposits in a classroom of the Shawnee Mission School District got MCU on its way to where it is today.
Almost a decade later, membership privileges were extended to school employees across the rest of the county and, in 1979, the institution made anyone living or working in the area eligible. Over the next 25 years, more credit unions came under the umbrella and the charter was extended to include the entire Kansas City Metropolitan area – 16 counties in all. The organization then expanded into Kansas in nearby Lawrence and Leavenworth, leading to the name change to Mainstreet Credit Union in early 2010.
Products and Services:
The following products and services are being offered by the credit union:
- Free and Interest-bearing Checking Accounts
- Savings Accounts
- Home, Auto, and Personal Loans
- Online Banking
- Credit and Gift Cards
- Business Checking Accounts and Lending Services
Organizational Structure:
As with all credit unions, shareholders elect a volunteer Board of Directors to oversee the big-picture decisions that will help MCU continue to grow and meet the needs of its members. Working with executives that run it from day to day, these individuals lay out a plan to help the institution stay true to its roots as a people-first organization. This has led more than 52,000 people to choose MCU as the home for their financial business, which means the group oversees more than $263 million in assets.
