Nevada Federal Credit Union
Historic Background:
What today stands as ONCU is, in fact, the child of two financial cooperatives begun in about a year apart in the early 1950s. The first, Vegas Air Base Federal Credit Union, began when nine civilians put $5 in to create a system for lending that quickly grew by leaps and bounds – there were 77 members by the end of the first year.
In downtown Las Vegas, at City Hall, seven workers created a similar financial cooperative that quickly grew to include 66 people. For more than three decades, the two organizations grew independently and added more services to meet the needs of their membership.
In 1983, the grown-up organizations that were born thirty years before – now named the Nellis Southern Nevada and Las Vegas City Employees Credit Unions, respectively – merged to form Nevada Federal Credit Union.
This combined membership meant many workers from the local hotels and employees from other state agencies were all banking under the same roof and, eventually, locations as far away as Reno could be served.
As a result of this dramatic expansion, the group changed its name to One Nevada Credit Union in 2011 to better reflect the wide range of people it services.
Products and Services:
The following products and services are being offered by the credit union:
- Deposit Accounts
- Online Banking
- Auto Loans
- Mortgages
- Business Lending
- Wealth Management
- Mobile Banking via Apps
- Credit Cards
Organizational Structure:
With more than 80,000 members spread across 21 branches throughout the state of Nevada, you might imagine it’s pretty important to keep tabs on all the goings-on, but ONCU does it in a unique way. Day-to-day operations are, as you would expect, overseen by a President that connects with employees at all levels.
What makes ONCU different is the fact the Board of Directors is completely volunteer-based. The executives who run each location are only permitted to advise the committee and are unable to serve on it. Each year, new board members are elected, bringing fresh ideas to the organization and helping it to continue to flourish.
