PeoplesChoice Credit Union

PeoplesChoice Credit Union (PCU) is a not-for-profit financial services organization owned by its members living and working in two southern Maine counties, York and Cumberland.

History:
In 1963, a few members of tiny St. Joseph’s Church in Biddeford, Maine each contributed some money to form an organization to help others manage their finances with lower-interest loans and higher-yielding savings accounts than corporate banks could offer.

Working out of the church basement for nearly a decade, the credit union slowly grew – renting a building near the house of worship before finally buying its own building in 1984. Remarkably, membership remained restricted to only parishioners at St. Joseph’s and St. Ignatius’ Churches, as well as a handful of employee groups. Then, in the middle of the year 2000, membership widened to include anyone in the surrounding area.

Organizational Structure:
As with all credit unions, governance is handled by an elected board of volunteer directors. In this case, nine people oversee the strategic path the institution will follow, working in conjunction with executives that manage its five branches’ daily operations to make sure PCU remains fiscally sound while giving members the full range of options necessary to achieve their goals. This careful attention to the community being served has led PCU’s growth to 14,000 shareholders and asset holdings of $121 million.
