Schools Financial Credit Union (SFCU) is a member-owned and -operated financial organization that utilizes its not-for-profit status to give people in the Sacramento, California area an option beyond corporate banking.

History:
Founded in 1933 by a group of seven teachers, SFCU set about to provide members with low-cost loans from the start. Those original investors sought to bring the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” to their fellow educators in a very real way, sharing the dividends from the interest returned when lending across all accountholders.

Over time, this attitude led employees at all levels of the California school system – from elementary schools on up to universities – to seek membership and, eventually, people in the surrounding community. Today, SFCU serves the population of ten counties from its eleven branch locations and is one of the largest credit unions in the state.

Organizational Structure:
Like most credit unions, SFCU is overseen by an elected board of directors that volunteer their time to for a set period to ensure the institution continues to be financially stable while meeting the various needs of its members. These seven individuals, with the help of the President and CEO, make sure the 290 employees of SFCU uphold the organization’s core mission to provide its member-owners with the best possible experience while helping them to achieve their goals. As a result, more than 111,000 people do their banking with SFCU, which leaves it with more than $1.3 billion in assets.
