Tropical Financial Credit Union
History:
In 1935, employees of the Southern Bell telephone company pooled $800 to create an alternative to the corporate banks for their coworkers, achieving a charter as Miami Bell System Employees Federal Credit Union.
The organization grew rapidly, having more than $100,000 in assets just five years later after the name changed to Tropical Telco Federal Credit Union. Thanks to a growing number of associations with other employers and a diminished presence of the telecom industry (now headed by AT&T), the institution changed its name to Tropical Financial Credit Union in 1995 and extended membership to those living in Broward, Palm Beach, and Sarasota Counties in addition to Miami-Dade.
Products and Services:
The following products and services are being offered by the credit union:
- Free and High-yield Checking Accounts
- Savings and Money Market Deposits
- Home, Auto, and Personal Loans
- Online Banking
- Retirement Planning and Investments
- Business Checking and Lending Services
Organizational Structure:
As with all credit unions, TFCU is led by a group of elected volunteers that sit on the Board of Directors in staggered terms. Each of these people works in conjunction with an appointed Supervisory Committee and hired executives to ensure the financial health of the organization as it seeks to provide the highest quality services to each of its 65,000 members. This commitment to excellence and personal connections has grown TFCU’s assets well past the $700 million mark it achieved in 2007.
