Currency Option Trading



Two broad types of trading are carried out in the currency market. One is foreign exchange trading, which is a well-known concept; the other is currency option trading. The latter involves buying and selling of rights required in the transaction of a stipulated amount of currency in a given amount of time. Commercial and investment banks run the currency options market. The speculators, traders, currency hedgers, portfolio managers and central banks on occasions use currency options.

Trading in currency options started in the 1970s. This trade experienced an unprecedented upswing once it entered the inter-bank foreign exchange market. Money can be made and lost very fast in this trade, which reflects the erratic rise and fall in prices in the foreign exchange market. This market is open 24 hours for trading. This form of trading however shows greater stability than trading of foreign currency. Corporations often use the trading currency option as a measure for guarding against the effects of vacillating exchange rates.

The value of the currency or the value of the option changes on a specific date and this is the result of anticipating the market risks beforehand. This versatility in the currency option trading enables the traders to adjust their financial positions. The long-term effects of the activities and happenings in the market need to be taken into consideration. Before implementing the currency options, the value of a currency has the potential to change many times.


Currency options trading are done mainly in the US dollar, German mark and Japanese yen. The Euro is now replacing the German mark. Calls and puts on foreign currency are the two currency options. The exotic currency option is different from the normal vanilla currency options. The barrier option is a popular exotic currency option. A type of barrier option is the knock-out option. Some other options are double-barrier currency options, binary option, compound options and average rate currency options.
