Colombo Stock Exchange

Being the major exchange in Sri Lanka and one of the most advanced exchanges in South Asia, Colombo Stock Exchange offers a trading arena which is completely Computerized. The dream of the CSE is to add to the wealth of the nation with making value through securities.

History and Origin of CSE

In 1896 ,the Colombo Stock Brokers Association started the share trading with companies which had restricted accountability and entailed in aperture of plantation in Sri Lanka.
In 1985, an official stock exchange was established with integration of the Colombo Share Brokers Association . At present 15 institutions are members of it and all of them arelicensed to operate as sharebrokers.

Market capitalization, Indices

During 31 st of May 2005, 243 companies are enrolled on the CSE, on behalf of twenty business sectors with a market capitalization of 497 billion rupees(over US$ 4.9 billion), that matches approximately 24% of the Gross Domestic Product of the country.

Presently there are 2 indices in the CSE

1.The All Share Price Index (ASPI)
2. The Milanka Price Index(MPI)

After ceasefire aggrement signed in 2001 , the ASPI floating approximately the 500 mark in August 2001, has now exceed the 2000 mark. This has led the CSE to be known as one of the finest performing markets in the World.During 2005 (for the earlier three years)ASPI's consistent annual growth was over 30%, which was a record.

Affiliation

The CSE was the first Exchange in the South Asian Region and the 52 nd Exchange of the World which was elected as a member of the World Federation of Exchanges(FIBV) in October 1998 .
The CSE was one of the creating member of the South Asian Federation of Exchanges(SAFE).
