Shanghai Stock Index

The Shanghai stock index is currently in its growing stage. Recently the Shanghai stock index reached 4,000 point mark. Also mentioned as Shanghai composite index, the Shanghai stock index is the most important stock index used to reflect the performance of SSE's market in China. The market capitalization of Shanghai stock exchange (SSE) is approximately US$1.7 trillion. Shanghai stock exchange is the eighth largest stock exchange in the world. According to the market study done in 2006, there are 842 companies listed in Shanghai stock exchange.

The most commonly used index for SSE is the Shanghai stock index. The Shanghai stock index is also popularly known as SSE composite index. The listed A shares and B shares of Shanghai Stock Exchange constitute the SSE Composite Index. December 19, 1990 is the base day for SSE composite index; 100 is the base value of SSE composite index and base period is the total market capitalization of all the stocks of that particular day.

SSE 50 Index and SSE 180 Index are the other indices that are used to reflect the market performance of the Shanghai stock exchange. According to the trading summary of 2006, the total number of stock listing of A shares was 832 with the market value of 7111.8 billion Yuan while the total number of listed B shares was 54 with market value of 49.4 billion Yuan. The Shanghai stock composite index was launched on July 15, 1991.
