World Stock Index

World stock index refers to all the major stock indexes of the world. A number of principal stock exchanges are operating in the different parts of the world and their indexes are collectively considered to be the world stock indexes.

The leading stock exchanges of the world and their respective stock indexes are the following:

  • The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE Euronext): The stock indices used in NYSE are NYSE Composite Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average Index.

  • London Stock Exchange (LSE): The official stock market index of London Stock Exchange is the Footsie (FTSE). A series of indices are implemented for measuring the price movements of the stocks and shares on the LSE. These include FTSE 100 Index, FTSE 250 Index, and FTSE 350 Index. This series is supervised by the FTSE Group.


    • Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE): The official stock index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange is the Nikkei. The other indices used in TSE include Topix and J30.

    • NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations): The principal index used in NASDAQ is the NASDAQ Composite Index.

    • Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE): The principal stock index of the Shanghai Stock Exchange is the SSE Composite Index. Other indices include the SSE 50 Index and the SSE 180 Index.

    • Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE): The stock indices of the Toronto Stock Exchange are the S&P/TSX 60 Index, S&P/TSX Composite Index, and the S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index.

    • Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE): The principal stock index of BSE is called the BSE Sensex (Sensitive Index) or the BSE 30.

    • Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKSE): The official stock market index of Hong Kong Stock Exchange is the Hang Seng.

    • Frankfurt Stock Exchange: The principal stock index of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange is the DAX.

    • The Australian Securities Exchange: The principal stock index of the Australian Securities Exchange is the S&P/ASX 200 Index.
