The
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), popularly known as “Big Board," situated in New York City. It is the major stock exchange in the world by means of dollar volume and the second most important by means of number of enrolled companies.
The NYSE is controlled by NYSE Group, which was established with the amalgamation of a fully electronic stock exchange Archipelago Holdings.The trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange is situated at 11 Wall Street. The main building is enrolled on the National Register of Historic Places and is situated at 18 Broad Street.
History and Origin of the New York Stock Exchange
On May 17, 1792, the root of the NYSE can be traced, when twenty-four stock brokers were signed the Buttonwood Agreement under a buttonwood tree at the outside of 68 Wall Street in New York.
On March 8, 1817, the organization outlined a constitution and known as the "New York Stock & Exchange Board".
In 1863, this name was edited and became known as The New York Stock Exchange.
In 1817, NYSE’s first central trading place (one room) was situated at 40 Wall Street. In the years between 1896 and 1901, the share trading operation was increased.
On April 22, 1903, The
New York Stock Exchange building opened at 18 Broad Street and this building was enrolled as a National Historic Landmark and on June 2, 1978 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1922, a building came up at 11 Broad Street for offices, and a new trading floor known as "the garage". Extra trading floor space was come up in 1969 and 1988 (the "blue room") including the latest technology for information display and communication. In 2000, a new trading floor was opened at 30 Broad Street which was closed in early 2006 with the advent of the Hybrid Market where a larger proportion of trading was implemented automatically.

In the 1990s, NYSE’s share volume was surpassed by NASDAQ, but in terms of the total market capitalization, the enrolled companies on the NYSE was five times exceeded by enrolled companies on NASDAQ. The New York Stock Exchange has a worldwide capitalization of $21 trillion, with $7.1 trillion in non-U.S. companies.
