Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) is the earliest stock exchange in the United States which was established in 1790. In 1949, it amalgamated with the Baltimore Stock Exchange and the Washington Stock Exchange in 1954. The PHLX situated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In December 1968, in reacting to a fiscal crisis, the City of Philadelphia enforced a $0.05-per-share stock transfer tax for the entire dealings operated on the PHLX. On January 2, 1969, the PHLX shifted its trading floor to an office building (called Decker Building) to evasion of the tax. In February, the PHLX shifted back its trading floor to its headquarters in the city, with the declaration of a court that the tax was illegal.
On October 22, 1981, trading was stopped on both the Chicago Board of Trade and the
Philadelphia Stock Exchange when unidentified callers claimed that bombs were positioned in those buildings.
In 2005, a number of large financial firms like Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, Credit Suisse First Boston, UBS AG, Merrill Lynch and Citadel Investment Group (who jointly own approximately 45% of the exchange) bought stakes in the Exchange as evade against developing integration of dealing stocks by the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
