Maryland Sales Tax

The Maryland sales tax is imposed on all trading transactions with the exception of a few vehicle rentals and mobile home sales. A lot of the food items sold in the major stores are outside the purview of Maryland sales tax.
Maryland Sales Tax Rates
The standard sales tax rate in Maryland is 5%. There are no general local sales taxes as such. However there are specific sales tax rates imposed on the selling and leasing of certain commodities. The renting of short-term passenger cars and vehicles used for recreation, is subject to taxation at a rate of 11.5%. A tax of 8% is levied on the short-term truck rental services and for the sales of mobile homes the rate is 3%.
Maryland Sales Tax Exemptions
In the state of Maryland categories like medicines, manufacturing machineries and equipments, energy for residential use and a few agricultural implements and supplies are exempted from sales taxes.


Maryland Timely Discounts
In the state of Maryland there is a provision to reward those taxpayers who pay their sales tax within the stipulated time. The taxpayers who abide by the rules like filing for tax returns and paying taxes at the correct time on a consistent basis are the recipients of such privileges. They are permitted to keep a certain part of the payable sales taxes with themselves.

The amount received by the respective taxpayer as per this program differs according to the amount of tax collected from him. For the first $ 6,000 worth of taxes paid by the payer the benefits are provided at 1.2% and for the rest it is calculated at 0.9%.
Maryland Sales Tax Rules
The sales tax rules in Maryland state that if the date for submitting the tax report is a Saturday, Sunday or a holiday, then the report needs to be submitted the very next day when the business resumes. The sales tax laws also state that is mandatory for the taxpayers to file a return.
