Tennessee Sales Tax

The Tennessee sales tax rate is 7 percent while the local tax rate may vary from 1.5 percent to 2.75 percent. The Tennessee Department of Revenue assesses and controls the taxing service in the state.

The sales tax is the tax levied on the consumers when they go for purchasing any good in retail. The sales tax is paid by the sellers to the government, though the buyers bear the actual burden of sales tax. The entire sales tax goes to the government fund and then gets distributed to the local governments for various purposes. The sales tax levied by the state is generally added by some more local taxes implemented by the respective county or city where the transaction is being carried out.

The Tennessee sales tax pattern may be different for different goods. In Tennessee State 6% sale tax is imposed on the grocery items while 7% sales tax is implemented on other items. The counties in Tennessee have the authority to levy additional sales tax on the goods and they may impose sales tax from 1.5% to 2.75%. If any county in Tennessee does not levy the maximum sales tax rate (here 2.75%), then generally the city implements the reminder part of sales taxation on that good.

In Tennessee the food is taxed at 6 percent but the items like dietary supplements, candy, and prepared food are taxed at 7 percent rate. It is believed that the Tennessee sales tax is regressive in nature as the lower income group has to expend more of their income on the items that are taxable. Hence it is also believed that the people in Tennessee prefer to shop online or buy goods from neighboring states in order to avoid sales tax.

Any individual or firm willing to do business in Tennessee has to get a sales tax license from the Department of Revenue if the product or service they are trading is taxable in the state. The Department of Revenue has now come up with online sales tax filing service in Tennessee with their website and people can file their sales tax through e-filing.
